Oxygen consumption of normal and atherosclerotic intima.

چکیده
THERE have been only a few reports in the literature concerning the oxidative metabolism of arterial tissue." Maier and Haimovici were the first to compare the oxidative capacity of different segments of normal rabbit aorta, using succinate and pphenylenediamine as substrates. Their results were reported as c. mm. O2 consumed per mg. dry weight of tissue per hour. They demonstrated no significant difference between the oxygen consumption from the locations (arch, thoracic, abdominal) studied. Di Sabato and Comolli, in the same year, reported figures for oxygen consumption by aortas from both normal and cholesterol-fed rabbits. Their results were expressed as c. mm. Oo per mg. DNA (deoxyribose nucleic acid) per hour. They reported that the oxidation of octanoate and acetoacetate by the aortas of cholesterol-fed rabbits was increased as compared with normal controls, while the oxidation of a-ketoglutarate was unchanged. They did not use succinate as a substrate, nor did thej divide the aorta into segments to compare differences in location. The work of Fisher and Geller is the only study of which the author is aware in which an attempt was made to compare metabolic activity of the arch, thoracic, and abdominal segments of normal and atherosclerotic rabbits. They reported that the aortic oxygen consumption in normal rabbits was lowest in the thoracic portion and not significantly different in the arch

Oxygen consumption in aortic tissue from rabbits with diet-induced atherosclerosis.
The inner parts of the arterial wall depend upon diffusion for nutrition and oxygenation. During the atherosclerotic process, increased intimal thickness leads to impaired diffusion, and at the same time the oxygen requirements increase. On this basis it has been suggested that the balance between the supply and demand of oxygen in the arterial wall may be important for the fate of the initiate...
متن کاملAssessment of Serum Magnesium Level and Its relation with Atherosclerotic Carotid Intima Media Thickness in Post-Menopausal Women
Objective: A magnesium deficiency is known to be involved in many abnormalities in the post-menopausal women. Previous studies proposed that magnesium (Mg) might prevent atherosclerosis. In this study the efficacy of serum magnesium level and its relation with carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in post-menopausal women was evaluated. Methods: Eighty Iranian Postmenopausal women were included...

متن کاملDoes HTLV-1 infection lead to increased intima-media thickness (IMT)? “Evidences form human clinical studies”
Briefly, based on the previous evidence and the results of the present study, it seems that infection with HTLV-1 by destruction of sub-layers of arteries, especially the intima layer, leads to disruption of the integrity of sub-layers of arteries and through various mechanisms, causing the sub-layer’s destruction, increasing the intima-media thickness, changing the lipid profile, and developme...
متن کاملNeovascularization in human atherosclerosis.
In the absence of disease, microvessels provide vessel wall nutrients to the tunica media, while the intima is fed by oxygen diffusion from the lumen. As disease evolves and the tunica intima thickens, oxygen diffusion is impaired, and microvessels become the major source for nutrients to the vessel wall. Microvessels serve as a port of entry for inflammatory cells, from the systemic circulatio...
